Commercial Kitchen Equipment Error Codes by Brand

Modern commercial kitchen equipment reports its own faults; most operators just never learn to read them. These pages translate manufacturer fault codes into plain language, flag which responses are operator-safe, and say clearly when the code means a technician. Every table is compiled from manufacturer service documentation, never guessed, and each page tells you to confirm against your exact model's manual, because code sets change between series and firmware.

Many machines remember what went wrong

The most useful thing an operator can do before calling is often not reading the current code but recovering the ones that have already been cleared. Several makes keep a history, and almost nobody uses it: a Scotsman Prodigy stores the last ten codes and reads them back with two buttons, a Manitowoc Indigo keeps errors with timestamps behind the blue i button, a Southbend touchscreen keeps a dated fault log in Settings, and Stero and Lincoln controls retain the most recent fault after a power cycle.

This matters because switching a machine off and on clears the display but not the cause. If the fault happened overnight, or somebody reset it before you arrived, the history is the only record that it happened at all. The per-brand pages give the button sequences.

Your machine may not show a number at all

Reading the manufacturer manuals behind these tables turned up something worth saying before you go looking: a fault code is not always a number on a display. Across the brands covered here it takes four different forms.

Two further things worth knowing. Some displays that look like faults are not: Garland's Auto is a cool-down fan, Beverage-Air's blue dot is standby, and Bunn's Temperature Too Low usually just means the brewer is still heating. And the same fault often reads differently depending on which controller is fitted, so identify the control before matching anything.

When a code list you found elsewhere is invented

Several sites publish confident fault-code tables for makes whose manufacturers document no codes at all. We ran into it twice while building this library. One site lists A1 to A4 codes for Traulsen; Traulsen's own master service manual describes named alarm conditions and no such codes. Another advertises a Southbend error code manual; Southbend's manual has four touchscreen messages and no numbered set. And three different sites give three different meanings for the same Turbo Air code, which tells you at least two of them are guessing.

The tell is uniformity. A page that gives every brand a tidy E1 to E5 set has usually pattern-matched rather than read anything, because real manufacturers are far less consistent than that: some count flashes of a light, some use words, some use three coloured LEDs read in combination, and plenty use nothing at all.

How to check for yourself. Find the service or owner's manual for your exact model on the manufacturer's own site and look for a troubleshooting or diagnostics section. If it lists symptoms rather than codes, your machine has no codes, and a technician will diagnose it from behaviour instead. That is normal, not a gap.

What we found wrong elsewhere

Working from manufacturer documentation rather than from other people's code lists turned up things that are simply not true, and it seems worth naming them rather than quietly leaving them out.

We would rather publish a table with a gap in it and say so than fill the gap with something plausible. Where a manufacturer's own PDF lost a column or a row in extraction, the page says which part is missing and why.
