Repair Planning Tools

Free, no-signup calculators for operators making equipment decisions. Numbers stay in your browser; nothing is submitted anywhere. Each tool encodes one published rule of thumb, stated below so you can see what the calculator is actually doing before you trust it.

Repair or replace applies the industry 50 percent rule: when a repair estimate passes half the cost of a comparable new unit, replacement usually wins, and the calculator tightens that threshold as the machine ages toward the end of its typical service life, because a big repair on old iron buys fewer remaining years. The refrigeration version of that decision is covered in depth in its own guide.

Equipment lifespans lists typical service-life ranges by equipment type, the same ranges the repair-or-replace tool uses for its age adjustment, so the two agree with each other by construction rather than by coincidence.

Hood cleaning frequency encodes the NFPA 96 inspection table: monthly for solid-fuel cooking, quarterly for high-volume operations such as 24-hour cooking, charbroiling or wok cooking, semiannually for moderate-volume kitchens, and annually for low-volume sites such as churches and seasonal businesses. The NFPA 96 guide explains what an inspection has to cover and who may perform it.

Downtime cost multiplies your revenue per operating hour by the hours a machine is expected to be dead and adds spoilage exposure, which is the number that decides whether after-hours emergency rates are worth paying. It pairs with what 24/7 actually means before you dial one.

The printable PM log is a one-page weekly and quarterly maintenance record, matching the preventive maintenance checklist, because the cheapest repair remains the one the log prevented.

The three calculators are also available as free embeddable widgets for other sites, each linking back here; the embed code is on the tool page itself.
