Commercial Ice Machine Repair: Costs and Common Problems
Published 08.03.2026. Written for restaurant operators and kitchen managers.
Ice machines fail slowly and then all at once, and a surprising share of service calls turn out to be cleaning and water quality rather than a broken part. Knowing which is which before you call is the difference between a cheap visit and an expensive one.
What actually fails, cheapest first
- Scale and biofilm build-up: the most common cause of reduced or no production; often resolved by a deep clean and descale rather than a part.
- Water filters past their life: cheap, routinely overlooked, and the root cause behind a large share of the faults below.
- Water inlet valve or float switch: moderate part cost, common failure, usually straightforward access.
- Water pump: a mid-range repair on most machines.
- Thermistors, sensors and control boards: diagnosis takes longer than the swap; board cost dominates on newer machines.
- Dirty or failing condenser: air-cooled condensers packed with grease and dust cause high head pressure and poor production, and cleaning is often the whole fix.
- Compressor or sealed system: the expensive end, frequently the point at which replacement wins on an older machine.
What repairs typically cost
These are planning ranges, not quotes. Almost nobody in this directory publishes a rate, one coffee specialist being the exception, and pricing varies by market, brand, access and time of day. Use them to judge whether a quote is in the right region, then read the published terms further down, because those are the part a company commits to in writing.
A clean and descale visit is the cheapest outcome and often the correct one. Water filters, inlet valves and float switches usually land in the low hundreds including the call. Pumps and sensors typically run into the mid hundreds. Control boards vary sharply by brand and can reach four figures. Sealed system and compressor work is the top of the range and rarely worth it on a machine past its expected life.
Two costs the invoice never shows: the downtime while you wait, and the stock or covers you lose. Our downtime cost calculator puts a number on the first, and the repair or replace calculator applies the half-rule to the second.
Before you call
Some faults have a check you can do first. Our diagnostic guide covers the checks worth making before you pay for a call-out, and what to have ready when you do call: make, model, serial number, what changed and when.
Prevention
Clean and sanitise on the manufacturer schedule rather than when production drops, change water filters on a diary date, and keep the condenser clear. Ice machines are food-contact equipment, so a cleaning schedule is a health requirement as well as a cost control.
Most of the expensive failures above are the end of a cheap one that was left alone. Our preventive maintenance checklist covers the intervals.
What companies actually put in writing
Published repair cost ranges are estimates. What is not an estimate is the terms a company commits to in writing, and those vary more than most operators expect. These are taken from the companies’ own websites while verifying 117 listings, and are worth reading before you approve work, because a cheaper hourly rate with no warranty can cost more than a dearer one with ninety days behind it.

Who fixes this, and what we checked
This directory lists 79 companies that repair ice machine equipment across Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Every one of them had its website opened and read by a person rather than scraped, which is how we found the parked domains, wrong phone numbers and closed businesses documented on our verification findings page.
- 79 verified companies
- 33 confirmed by a phone call
- 58 publish 24/7 or emergency cover
- 4 publish a licence number you can check
A published 24/7 claim is what the company says, not what we have proven. We are testing those claims by calling them after hours and will publish what actually happens. Until then, treat the promise as a promise.
Is there a code on the display? Look it up before you call: Manitowoc, Scotsman, Hoshizaki, Scotsman. Knowing the code changes what the technician brings with them.
