Service Company Credentials, Decoded
Published 08.03.2026. Written from what we found checking service company claims for this directory. For choosing between companies more broadly, see choosing a service company.
Every service company website carries credential language, and almost none of it is defined anywhere the customer can see. The distinctions matter most at exactly the wrong moment: when a warranty claim is being assessed after the repair is already done. Here is what each claim actually means and how to check it in a couple of minutes.
Factory branch, authorized agent, independent
A factory branch is owned by the manufacturer. Its technicians are manufacturer employees and warranty work is unambiguous. An authorized service agent or partner is an independent company that holds an agreement with one or more manufacturers to perform warranty work on their behalf. Many carry authorization for dozens or hundreds of brands. An independent holds no such agreement and works out of warranty.
All three are legitimate, and the middle category is the one most often misread. Checking listings for this directory, we found several companies described elsewhere as manufacturer branches that are actually long-standing independents operating as authorized partners: different ownership, different agreements, same quality of work. The practical difference is only that warranty authorization is brand-specific and needs confirming per brand.
The certification trap
CFESA, the Commercial Food Equipment Service Association, is the main trade body in this industry, and its branding appears in three different forms that are routinely conflated:
- Member: the company belongs to the association and may display the association logo. This is a subscription, not an assessment.
- Company certified: a company-level standard that is earned, maintained and listed in CFESA's own locator.
- Certified technicians: individual technicians hold certification. The company may or may not.
The phrase to read carefully is "our CFESA-certified technicians", which is a technician credential worn as if it were a company one. Checking every certification claim in this directory against CFESA's own locator turned up errors in both directions: certified companies listed as uncertified, and uncertified companies displaying badges. We list our confirmed ones at CFESA certified companies.
Verify it yourself, in two minutes
For brand authorization, ask the manufacturer rather than the service company. Most publish a service agent locator, and their customer line will confirm authorization for your specific brand and model. For CFESA certification, search the association's own company locator rather than trusting a logo on a website. In both cases the authority is the organization doing the certifying, never the company claiming it, and never a third-party directory, including this one: check us too.
Do this before warranty work specifically. Out of warranty, a good independent with the right parts is often the better call, and credentials matter less than whether they have serviced your equipment type before. Our warranty guide covers what actually voids cover.
What none of these credentials tell you
No credential predicts whether anyone answers the phone at 9pm, whether the truck carries your part, or how long the drive is. Those are the things that determine whether tomorrow's service is any good, and they are worth asking about directly. Our guide to 24/7 claims covers the first, and sourcing parts covers the second.
What companies actually put in writing
Published repair cost ranges are estimates. What is not an estimate is the terms a company commits to in writing, and those vary more than most operators expect. These are taken from the companies’ own websites while verifying 117 listings, and are worth reading before you approve work, because a cheaper hourly rate with no warranty can cost more than a dearer one with ninety days behind it.
