Kitchen Equipment Warranties: What Voids Them
Published 07.30.2026. General guidance; every manufacturer's warranty terms govern. Read yours once, the day the equipment arrives.
What a typical warranty covers
Most commercial equipment carries roughly a year of parts and labor with longer terms on core components (compressors commonly carry extended coverage), and coverage means a manufacturer-authorized service company performing the repair with OEM parts, billed to the factory. Which is why our directory flags factory service arms and authorized agents: during year one, calling anyone else for a covered failure can turn a free repair into one you pay for twice.
The five classic claim-killers
First, water: ice machines, steamers, combis, and espresso machines almost universally carry water quality clauses, and scale damage on untreated water is the most-denied claim in food service. Second, chemicals: the wrong cleaner, like non nickel-safe acid on a plated evaporator, is visible to any technician and excluded by every manufacturer (our ice machine cleaning guide covers this). Third, installation: units installed out of spec, without required clearances, water treatment, or startup by an authorized agent where required. Fourth, paperwork: unregistered equipment and missing maintenance records give an adjuster easy exits. Fifth, unauthorized repair or generic parts on covered components.
The day-one checklist
Register the unit, file the invoice, spec sheet, and startup report in one folder, install the water treatment the manual specifies, and put the required maintenance on your PM schedule with dates logged. Ten minutes per unit; it is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy.
After the warranty
Post-warranty you are free to choose any qualified company, and the calculus shifts to competence and response time; our choosing a service company guide covers that decision, and the brand pages show who states they service your equipment, factory arms and independents alike.
What companies actually put in writing
Published repair cost ranges are estimates. What is not an estimate is the terms a company commits to in writing, and those vary more than most operators expect. These are taken from the companies’ own websites while verifying 117 listings, and are worth reading before you approve work, because a cheaper hourly rate with no warranty can cost more than a dearer one with ninety days behind it.
