Is That Service Company Actually Near You?

Published 08.03.2026. These are the checks we run on every listing in this directory, written up so you can run them yourself on any company, including the ones we list.

Search for kitchen repair in almost any city and you will find companies that appear to have an office there and do not. This is rarely deception. Companies publish a page for each city they cover, which is ordinary marketing, and directories then read those pages as branch offices. The result is an operator calling what looks like a local company and getting a truck dispatched from two hours away.

One company representative explained it to us directly when we asked about a location we had listed: they had no office in that city, the map was showing areas they could cover, and only the starred points were actual locations. Checking the rest of our own directory the same way turned up five listed branches that did not exist.

Check one: does the area code match?

This single check has caught every wrong-metro listing we have found. If a company presents itself as based in your city but publishes a number from an area code sixty miles away, it is almost certainly dispatching from there. Area codes do move with mobile numbers and companies do keep old numbers, so treat a mismatch as a question rather than a verdict, but ask the question.

Check two: is there a street address anywhere?

A real location has a street address on the site, usually on the contact page and often in the footer. A city name with no address, or an address that appears only in third-party directories and never on the company's own site, is a signal. Third-party data goes stale constantly: we found a trade association's own database listing an address a company had moved away from, and a company website whose contact page contradicted every directory entry about it. The company's own site wins.

Check three: read the county list

Many companies publish the counties they cover, which is the most honest form of service area statement there is. It is also easy to check against your own address. We found a company we had listed as covering a major metro whose own county list simply did not include that metro's county. If a company lists counties and yours is absent, believe the county list.

Check four: what does the phone answer as?

Call during business hours before you need them. A branch number answered by someone who knows the local schedule is a different proposition from a corporate switchboard that takes a message. Neither is disqualifying, but they predict very different experiences at 7pm on a Saturday. Note that the reverse trap exists too: a corporate line announcing the office is closed does not mean the company lacks after-hours coverage, since branch numbers frequently reach an emergency line when the corporate one does not.

What to do with the answer

Distance is not disqualifying. A company an hour away may be the best in the region, and for planned maintenance it hardly matters. It matters for emergencies, travel charges, and whether your part is on the truck. So ask two direct questions: what is the travel charge to my address, and what is a realistic arrival window for an emergency call here. A company that answers both clearly is one worth keeping.

In this directory, companies based in a metro and companies that cover it from elsewhere are listed separately and labelled, precisely because the difference changes what you should expect. You can see the standard we apply at our verification page, and what checking it turned up at verification findings.

What companies actually put in writing

Published repair cost ranges are estimates. What is not an estimate is the terms a company commits to in writing, and those vary more than most operators expect. These are taken from the companies’ own websites while verifying 117 listings, and are worth reading before you approve work, because a cheaper hourly rate with no warranty can cost more than a dearer one with ninety days behind it.
