Walk-In Cooler Not Cooling: What to Check First

Published 07.26.2026. Written for restaurant operators and kitchen managers.

A warming walk-in is a race against the clock: food held above 41 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 4 hours generally has to be thrown out. Before you place an emergency service call, run through these checks. Several of the most common causes take five minutes and zero tools to fix.

If the controller is showing a code, start there

Most walk-in and reach-in controllers put the fault on the display before anyone notices the product is warm. These come from the manufacturers' own service manuals for 7 makes. Each code links to its row in the full table.

A temperature alarm and a sensor fault look identical from outside the box: both give a warm walk-in and an unhappy display. The code is what separates a refrigeration problem from a controller problem, and they are different callouts.

Five-minute checks before you call

Signs you need a technician now

Protecting product while you wait

Keep the door closed as much as possible, log temperatures every 30 minutes for your health inspector, and move the highest-risk product (dairy, meat, seafood) to a working unit first. If the repair will run long, ask the service company about temporary refrigerated trailer rental; many offer it.

What the repair may cost

Simple fixes like a gasket replacement or a condenser cleaning are commonly in the low hundreds of dollars. Component failures such as evaporator fan motors or defrost controls typically run higher, and compressor replacement on a walk-in is often a four-figure repair. Exact pricing varies by market and unit, so get the diagnosis fee and hourly rate when you book the call.

Freezer instead of a cooler? Ice buildup has its own diagnostic map: see the walk-in freezer guide.

Reach-ins showing a code? Look it up: True refrigeration error codes.

Find a refrigeration service company

Every commercial refrigeration company in this directory is listed with its service area and 24/7 availability: Cincinnati, Columbus, or Dayton.

If it is a reach-in rather than a walk-in

Self-contained reach-in coolers and freezers fail differently and much faster. See reach-in cooler not cooling.

Working out whether to approve the repair? See what a walk-in repair typically costs, including the warranty terms companies put in writing.

If it is already warming and there is stock inside, start with what to do in the first two hours: stock triage comes before the repair call.

Stock at risk while you wait for a repair? A refrigerated trailer can often be on site the same day, rented by the day and delivered set up.

Who fixes this, and what we checked

This directory lists 101 companies that repair walk-in and refrigeration equipment across Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Every one of them had its website opened and read by a person rather than scraped, which is how we found the parked domains, wrong phone numbers and closed businesses documented on our verification findings page.

  • 101 verified companies
  • 41 confirmed by a phone call
  • 75 publish 24/7 or emergency cover
  • 6 publish a licence number you can check

A published 24/7 claim is what the company says, not what we have proven. We are testing those claims by calling them after hours and will publish what actually happens. Until then, treat the promise as a promise.

Is there a code on the display? Look it up before you call: Perlick, True, Beverage-Air, Traulsen. Knowing the code changes what the technician brings with them.
