Walk-In Cooler Not Cooling: What to Check First

A warming walk-in is a race against the clock: food held above 41 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 4 hours generally has to be thrown out. Before you place an emergency service call, run through these checks. Several of the most common causes take five minutes and zero tools to fix.
If the controller is showing a code, start there
Most walk-in and reach-in controllers put the fault on the display before anyone notices the product is warm. These come from the manufacturers' own service manuals for 7 makes. Each code links to its row in the full table.

A temperature alarm and a sensor fault look identical from outside the box: both give a warm walk-in and an unhappy display. The code is what separates a refrigeration problem from a controller problem, and they are different callouts.
Five-minute checks before you call
- Door and gaskets. A door propped open during a delivery, a torn gasket, or a door that no longer self-closes is the single most common cause of a warm walk-in. Close the door on a dollar bill: if it slides out easily, the gasket is not sealing.
- Evaporator airflow inside the box. Product stacked against the evaporator coil or blocking its fans stops air circulation. Keep clearance around the unit.
- Iced-over evaporator coil. If the coil inside is a block of ice, the unit cannot move air through it. An iced coil usually points to a defrost problem, a refrigerant issue, or a door left open in humid weather.
- Condenser coil and clearance. Find the condensing unit (on the roof, outside, or on top of the box) and check that its coil is not caked in dust and grease and that nothing is stored against it. A dirty condenser is the most common cause a technician finds, and regular coil cleaning is basic preventive maintenance.
- Power and settings. Confirm the unit has power, no breaker has tripped, and no one has changed the thermostat setpoint.
Signs you need a technician now
- The compressor short-cycles (starts and stops every minute or two) or does not run at all.
- Ice on the refrigerant lines, hissing sounds, or an oily residue near fittings, which can indicate a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant work legally requires an EPA Section 608 certified technician.
- The evaporator re-ices within hours of a manual defrost.
- Temperature keeps climbing despite airflow, door, and condenser checks.
Protecting product while you wait
Keep the door closed as much as possible, log temperatures every 30 minutes for your health inspector, and move the highest-risk product (dairy, meat, seafood) to a working unit first. If the repair will run long, ask the service company about temporary refrigerated trailer rental; many offer it.

Simple fixes like a gasket replacement or a condenser cleaning are commonly in the low hundreds of dollars. Component failures such as evaporator fan motors or defrost controls typically run higher, and compressor replacement on a walk-in is often a four-figure repair.
